Although the cause of acne is not known exactly, it is a multifactorial disease, and it is the skin condition that occurs as a result of the sebum, that is, the oil-secreting glands in the skin, are clogged, swollen and then infected with bacteria.
Blackheads, or comedones, occur as a result of clogged pores caused by the glands producing too much oil. Then these comedones become infected with bacteria and appear as raised lesions on the skin. Although acne affects people of all ages, it is most common among young patients. Various topical agents can be used in its treatment. In more severe acne cases where topical agents are insufficient, oral treatments can be applied.
